Iris Avenue, Coniston – Split Carriageway Retaining Wall, Associated Earthworks and Drainage

A temporary concrete block retaining wall was constructed by Wollongong City Council back in 2017 following a localized slippage on the heavily vegetated embankment dividing the carriageways of Iris Avenue Coniston.

Before

The block wall was installed as an immediate, yet interim measure until a long-term solution to the overriding issue of the slope stability was designed and constructed to ensure the safety of the Iris Avenue for residents and road users.

This project ensured the long-term stability of the embankment between the dividend carriageways at Iris Avenue.

The works involved demolition of existing retaining structures, excavation and removal of unsuitable fill materials and replacement with engineering fill upon completion of the retaining wall.

The retaining wall itself included bored pier foundations, supply and installation of galvanized H-Beams, a new concrete sleeper retaining wall of approximately 80m long and up to 2.4m high, drainage works, fencing, landscaping and remediation works.

Cadifern team were able to efficiently resolve all project challenges and demonstrate strength and commitment to achieving the desired project outcome

The project was successfully completed in April 2020 within all quality requirements, budget, and programme. Providing a safe long-term embankment stability solution for the local community and road users.
